Barrier Awareness Day November 2002

On Tuesday, November 12, 2002 the Santa Maria Independent Living Resource Center staff and Advisory Board will be hosting a “Barrier Awareness Day”. This past year our Advisory Board has brought many barriers in the community to the attention of the ILRC staff. We have planned an afternoon of showing people what it is like to try and get around in the community when there are so many barriers.

We have invited anyone and everyone, from city council members to the state senator, with hopes of opening up the public’s eyes as to what our consumers have to go through every day of their lives. We will put some in wheelchairs, others with walkers and go out to planned routes and businesses in the community where we know are inaccessible. The only difference is they will be able to get out of the wheelchairs and go home after we are through, not like our consumers. We will also be giving a couple of businesses certificates for making changes so that the disabled can visit their place of business. We hope that it will be an educational event and that maybe we stand a chance of some changes being made.

The event will start at the local ILRC office at 1:00 and last until 3:00. It is located at 327 E. Plaza Drive. The public is welcome to attend. Questions or accommodations needed, please feel free to call 925-0015 V/TTY or drop a note to one of the staff in the Santa Maria office by email.
