Dr. Glen White, Dr. Michael Fox and Cathy Rooney suggested that I contact you for your assistance. As you know, the University of Kansas' Research & Training Center on Independent Living at the University of Kansas is working on a research project that is a grant from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention designed to assess current emergency preparedness and disaster management plans pertaining to assisting people with mobility impairments during emergencies.
IF YOU HAVE A MOBILITY LIMITATION AND HAVE EXPERIENCED ANY TYPE OF NATURAL DISASTER… WE WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU!!
A new website called, "Nobody Left Behind: Emergency Preparedness for Persons with Mobility Impairments” can be found at http://rtcil.org/NLB_home.htm. Whether you have past recollections or current experiences, we would like you to complete a brief survey if you have a mobility limitation and have personal experience with any type of natural disaster such as tornadoes, flooding, hurricanes, earthquakes or man-made disaster.
This on-line survey is fully accessible and can be found at http://rtcil.org/survey.htm. It is easy and will take less than 10 minutes of your time and it will be important in shaping the future of emergency planning! Your stories will remain anonymous but will help direct researchers, emergency managers and responders regarding the following questions:
Do persons with a mobility limitation have equal access to building evacuation?
What obstacles complicate post-disaster services at a shelter, or services to re-enter your work or home after a disaster?
What worked and did not work for you in a disaster situation?
We want to know this and more! Please log onto http://rtcil.org/survey.htm!
If you have difficulty typing or using a computer, you can request consumer survey information from:
