I have been a long time member of the Association of Late-Deafened Adults (see link on left side) which is about communication and acceptance of every deafened individual. Some people lip-read, some sign, some use hearing aids, some have cochlear implants, and some need to have others write down what they are saying - and at ALDA all the above is okay! ALDAs official communication philosophy is "Whatever works!"
One day I hope to start a local ALDA chapter in Santa Barbara. But these local chapter are nothing compared to the nationwide ALDA convention every fall. I have been to about 10 annual ALDACon gathering. These gatherings are simply wonderful and its a pleasure to meet many people, especially newcomers every year who discover how their life is just beginning.
I strongly encourage you and your family and friend to come to the Annual ALDA meeting which this year will be held in Colorado Springs on September 1st to September 5th (Click here for more info).
Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions about ILRC, ALDA or I can personally help you in any way.
Are you frustrated due to adult onset hearing loss? Discouraged? Isolated? Are you curious about technology that might be helpful to you? Do you feel like you will never be able to enjoy a group activity again? Then come to ALDAcon 2010! It will change your life!
